As the Chief Mining Engineer, you will be responsible for providing strategic and operational expertise to the mine technical functions including planning, survey, geology, drill & blast area to ensure that the life of mine plans is prepared in a structured, accurate and timely manner to improve overall productivity of the company. Additionally, the Chief Mining Engineer shall provide day-to-day management of his/her direct reports including performance management and career development.
Location - Johannesburg, SA
Essential Functions:
- Oversee the completion of economic evaluations and feasibility studies.
- Provide consultancy and expert advice on mining and mineral extraction projects.
- Establish production targets and monitor their achievement; assure that monthly progress plans are completed on time and are available.
- Provide assistance and advice to the operating units ensuring maximum production, plan their activities, ensure they have corrected and up-to-date plans and information, and accurately measure key mining specifications.
- Evaluate new and innovative products, techniques and procedures.
- Advise and assist on project management processes to lead mine improvement projects.
- Long term strategic mine planning
- Mid-term operational mine planning
- Mining process optimization in order to extend Life of Mine in 3year, 1 year and 3 month plans to deliver long- and short-term shareholder value.
- Mine plan compliance and auditing
- Maintain an ordered repository of data, mine plans, engineering drawings, and related documents.
- Responsible for the evaluation and interpretation of the Geological model and the preparation of an optimized Mine plan and mining sequence, ensuring delivery of Budget outcomes, Mining and support services direction, meeting all legal obligations and delivering on outcomes within constraints of the current environment.
- Responsible for the evaluation of geological data and resource information and the provision of regular reserve reconciliations to enable accurate reserve depletion status to be determined.
- Provide analysis and commentary for the monthly, quarterly and annual reporting
- Work alongside the Chief Mine Geologist to optimise grade control and minimise dilution through mine designs and mine plans.
Ensure designs and applications are consistent with regulatory and company policies and procedures. - Provide relevant and specialised technical support to applicable stakeholders
- Assigns, supervises, and reviews the work performance of the team
- Plans, organises, leads, and develops work plans for the team
- Promotes teamwork, provides support, manages and evaluates performance by creating and maintaining individual development plans and performance contracts for the team
- Recommends and approves development plans
- Develops and coaches
Essential Qualification:
- Degree in Mining or Geology from a recognized international institution
- 20+ years in open pit or underground mining operations in operational and/or design roles
- Experience of the full mine cycle on very large operations
- Strong mine design and planning skills
Knowledge
- Knowledge and or experience in the mining industry
- Knowledge and or experience of exploration drilling and mineral resource classification
- Exposure to relevant mine planning software packages (e.g. Surpac, MineSched).
- Pit Optimisation experience and knowledge
- Knowledge and or experience of concentrator and hydrometallurgical process operation
