Role purpose
- Act as legal business partner for Commercial Units business teams providing pro-active and in-depth strategic legal and compliance advice to contribute to delivery of business strategic agenda, with a focus on value creation, value protection and value capture.
- Manage day to day legal issues in KAZBEC & Russia CUs.
- Support other CUs in EET/Region on as needed basis, as well as cross- territory projects or expertize centers (GDPR).
- Represent Legal, Compliance and Security focus areas.
Accountabilities
- Manage all legal matters within the assigned Commercial Units for which sound legal judgment, experience and independent reasoning is required.
- Assess proposed commercial relationships in order to ensure that their implications are fully understood; structure and draft/negotiate agreements to ensure these relationships are properly defined and recorded and advise on the operation of such relationships.
- Support the protection and enforcement of the proprietary rights of Syngenta’s businesses and assess, advise and coordinate the IP enforcement and anti-counterfeiting activities in the designated territory; work closely with other functions, including at regional and global level to maximise opportunities that will develop intelligence and enforcement action outside the assigned territory.
- Assist the implementation of the territory strategy at CU level.
- Support other members of the Legal function in contributing to the delivery of the strategic objectives of the business and the Legal function, including shaping and driving the assigned CU business and raise the profile of the Legal function with key customer groups.
- Develop and continuously improve knowledge and expertise in key areas of law that are central to the attainment of the objectives and strategy of Syngenta in the designated CUs/ projects/centers of excellence.
- Manage key third party claims by or against Syngenta in relation to its CU activities.
- Contribute in GDPR Center of Excellence.
Knowledge, experience & capabilities
Critical knowledge
- Excellent academic background with a bar exam level law degree from a university or equivalent.
- Sound knowledge in financial and accounting matters.
- Effective influencing and communication: Ability to deal effectively with members of the diverse functions with the presence and credibility to secure support, buy-in, and enthusiasm internally and externally for a course of action. Must also possess excellent relationship building, conflict management and networking skills. Ability to influence and work cross functionally and interact effectively within the EAME organization.
- Solutions Orientation: Clear focus and ability to achieve Syngenta’s business goals through proactive, creative, pragmatic and effective strategic advice. He/she must also have a keen sense of teamwork and ability to build trust and respect with other team members across multiple geographies.
Critical experience
- Approx. 6 to 8 years post-qualification experience gained within a multinational industry company and/or an international law firm.
- Experience in providing legal support in difficult and complex negotiations.
- Mature approach to his/her work and capable of leading projects involving other professionals and/or senior business colleagues. The job-holder must be able to take a strategic view of work and to identify and initiate change when necessary. There is a constant need to use judgement and understanding of the objectives and strategy of Syngenta and to prioritise and manage a large number of wide-ranging tasks.
- Experienced in working as a team and in building technical capability as well as broader business partnering, collaboration skill sets.
- High levels of analytical and conceptual competencies to structure business proposals and translate them into a suitable legal framework. High levels of communication and interpersonal competencies are also required to work with and effectively influence.
Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities
- Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision with members of diverse functions and across multiple geographies in a multicultural matrix environment and yet be a team player.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both orally and in writing, and the ability to influence and persuade and in order to gain credibility, secure support, buy-in and enthusiasm internally and externally for a course of action.
- Excellent command of English, spoken and written; fluency in other relevant European languages would be welcome.
- Excellent relationship building, conflict management and networking skills.
- Demonstrate attributes of attention to quality and details and the ability to organise and manage multiple priorities and work under pressure.
- High integrity and the ability to maintain principles under internal and/or external pressure.
- Strong results orientation, demonstrated negotiation and problem solving skills.
